You've read the articles, you've listened to friends and you've done the research. By now you're thinking something like "I should transition to more cruelty-free products..." but you quietly mutter to yourself, embarrassed "...it seems impossible."
First off, don't be embarrassed. We've all been there!
Making one product switch seems easy enough but the mounds of products in your household and in your life start to add up to seemingly endless piles in your head.
When you drill it down, there's your diet and your clothing and of course your makeup and cosmetics... and then there's shaving cream and shampoo and dish-washing detergent and dish-washing pods and even things like comforters and winter quilts. "Is it even really possible to make more cruelty-free choices on everything?"
By now you may have learned that better cruelty-free and vegan brands and companies exist, but then there are 'parent companies' and that some of those you can't morally totally agree with or trust. Inevitably, if you're at this point you've experienced the all too familiar wash-over of hopelessness followed by confusion followed by exhaustion.
To top it all off... maybe you've found a new option for a product but it isn't yet available or available in that exact formulation in your country or region! Yes it's true. When it comes to both foods and cosmetics, brands do sometimes vary the ingredients and standards by distribution region - crazy, right?
Firstly, hug yourself because if you're at this point you are a truly awesome person. There's really no other way to put it. This stuff isn't easy and it's not for the faint of heart.
Next, breathe! There is hope ...and while you're at it remind yourself that it's okay to do one thing at a time if that is the only way to make your transitions work. There is such a things as 'phasing something out' and we all go through it as new more conscious buyers!
One of the best ways to start is to think about the rooms in your house. For most the main rooms are:
as well as any living areas.
You can make a list all your own.
We recommend starting with just one room and then going for one product at a time within that room and so on. Of course if you happen to find something you love and it's a more cruelty-free replacement for a product associated with another room in the meantime, by all means go for it if you're ready. ...but that aside, pace yourself. It's okay to take your time and do your research when you're making a truly conscious effort. It doesn't always seem like it, but it will all come together and before you know it your household will become kinder and kinder to animals and the environment.
Here on the blog, we're going to get into exact product recommendations for how you can make the switch with products available or easily ship-able to Bucks County Pennsylvania soon - room by room.
